Short Boss Guide:
Let me just say right off the bat I love this fight. Voice of Riven is by far the most challenging boss encounter in a Destiny campaign. It is a fitting conclusion to Forsaken.
You won’t be fighting scorn here, this is a Taken Chimera after-all. There is nothing new in the way of enemies. Hobgoblins will snipe you from high platforms all over the room. Centurions will try and blast you into walls with their shields. The main annoyance in this fight is that Riven will send you to the ascendant realm to fight tougher Taken generals.
This happens several times throughout the fight as you whittle down its health pool. Inside and outside of the ascendant realm you will have to deal with dark damage fields all over the room.
Standing in one will do high dot (damage over time) damage and leave you incredibly vulnerable to the various ranged attackers and Riven itself.
Voice of Riven will become invulnerable to all attacks when it gains a green shield around itself. You will have to take out several small taken blights to lower the shield.
These are completely RNG based and can spread out anywhere in the arena. You will only have to deal with this mechanic when you aren’t in the ascendant realm.
There are various platform pathways you will need to climb if your aim is lacking. I prefer to take a sword with me into this encounter as the ability to go into 3rd person at times can prove invaluable.
While this is a challenging and somewhat frustrating boss fight, there is one solace for you here. Assuming you die at certain points in the encounter the game will save your progress. Unless you get shoved out to orbit somehow you can always pick up the fight at these checkpoints.
I kinda wish this feature could shut off though and I’m hoping it’s restricted in a harder heroic version of the mission.
Many add groups can overwhelm you here and some supers are unusable against the boss. While I can attack with my Void blade-dance attacks, likely I’d get one or two hits before falling down. That would be a waste so if you don’t have a super with air capabilities focus on adds when pinned down.
Remember the weakest Taken grunts have that frustrating self-replication ability to clone themselves. So make sure you have taken them all out before feeling safe in any area.
The adds won’t ever stop coming. It can become a bit disorienting to be dealing with adds in every direction, but make sure to focus the Voice of Riven down.
After the Voice of Riven sends you to the ascendant realm about three times you should be nearing the end of the fight. In the video I finish this encounter early by abusing my Titan’s missile super. Usually it will protect itself one more time with a shield and you will have to destroy a large amount of blights.
After dealing with the final force-field focus the boss down and enjoy the highly climactic ending. Who said Bungie can’t tell a good story… I did, yeah I was one of those people. At this point I believe my faith in them has finally been restored. I can’t wait to see what we will have to face next in Forsaken. Till then be safe, Guardian.
The Voice of Riven appears to be a horrific amalgamation of Fallen Servitor components and living flesh. In place of the central “eye” of a Servitor is a gaping maw, lined with rows of fangs. The exterior of the creature is covered with numerous translucent tentacles reminiscent of the appearance of the Taken.
