Forsaken Baron: Reksis Vahn, the Hangman Boss
Cinematic Boss Fight of Reksis Vahn the Hangman in Destiny 2’s Forsaken expansion. This clearly Dark Souls inspired arena and battle takes place in a room littered with cages and torture devices. The hangman like his minion counterparts wields a deadly flaming cauldron. A couple slams to the head will leave any guardian dead on the ground waiting for a ghost to re-ignite their life.
Don’t forget: Like, Subscribe (ring the bell) I think the Hangman fight is one of my favorites in all of Destiny. We haven’t had two many melee bosses and none that I remember were this closed in. What did y’all think? Were you getting the same Dark Souls and Bloodborne vibes I was? Let me know in the comments.
Short Boss Guide:
When you enter the boss room of Reksis Vahn the doors to his lair close and lock before he comes running at you swinging his cauldron at you and quickly ensuring the arena is covered in flames everywhere he slams.
Avoid the fire as burn damage is a dot (damage over time) attack. You are in a tiny arena. It evokes a very real feeling of dread and claustrophobia. Heightening the tension of this encounter. Reksis Vahn is an entirely melee fighter however do not let that fool you and make you feel safe. Reksis can still attack you from across the arena with a slam attacks that sends a wave of fire towards your location.
You cannot burn Reksis’ health down all the way as he will teleport away and spawn various adds throughout the room. It is important to note that the boss will spawn adds within the first few seconds of this fight as well.
Pretty much at all times you will have to deal with avoiding his swinging and slam attacks while clearing through adds. He will mostly spawn Stalkers which are ranged attackers who wield a mace and can therefore run at you for melee attacks as well as staying far away shooting you with their modified shock pistols. Stalkers can also throw grenades at you though so be careful.
Chieftains also spawn in the room periodically during the fight and they should be focused due to them having solar shields and can summon flaming totems which shoot out torrents of fire all directions anywhere they are placed. Considering how much fire plays a roll in this fight having an entire arena covered in fire by the combination of boss attacks and adds is a recipe for disaster.
Death comes quickly due to the shear amount of things that can kill you so make sure to always be running, keeping your distance from the boss but keenly aware of when his slam attacks will hit you.
The best thing about the fight against the Hangman in Destiny 2 Forsaken is its atmosphere and tone. I felt like this was a pretty sad moment somber considering the Hangman was present for Cayde 6’s murder. Your ghost makes mention of this at the end of the fight as well. Tonally this felt very dark and Dark Souls’esque.
The Hangman represents death and execution being an executioner himself. He siphons ether from servitors feeding the other barons. He is a personification of death and torture in that sense.
So get out there and end him Guardian. Do it for Cayde 6!
Lore: “He likes it. Too much.”
Reksis Vahn, the Hangman, is a Scorn Baron. A depraved executioner abandoned at birth, Vahn has a specific hatred of Servitors and their role in Fallen culture. Based in the Quitter’s Well, the Hangman siphons Ether from Servitors and uses it to feed his fellow Barons. Prior to his capture alongside those comrades, Vahn was responsible for exterminating the last Servitors of the House of Wolves, dooming the House to extinction. Imprisoned deep within the Prison of Elders, Reksis Vahn was freed by Uldren Sov, and was present at the murder of Cayde-6 at Sov’s hand. He appears to be a Ravager class Scorn pirate.
